Some shared their personal frustrations while others highlighted the creative upsides of a life with ADHD. Some were downright hilarious. I was most struck by the quality of responses, and how willing people were to share their personal worlds, in order to help shed more light on what it feels like to have ADHD. For those with a high IQ, insanity is still possible, but there is another possibility…true creative genius. Unfortunately, Low Latent Inhibition is difficult to spot, since it seems normal to the person who has it.
Isn’t it strange how smart people tend to do dumb things? I guess it’s one of those paradoxes of life when a computer genius locks himself out of his house, or a science whiz can’t remember where she left the pencil she used two minutes before.

Emotional Risk and Deep Relationships. In order to feel complex and deep emotions for someone in dating, we need to take risks. These risks start from when we get over our fears to walk up to them and introduce ourselves, with the possibility of rejection, to revealing that we love certain things, and risking them calling those same things childish, stupid, or boring.
My life experience has shown this to be true. All the smart people seem to be placed in highly specialized jobs, working for a much less intelligent leader at the top. Are smart people so deficient in social and primitive cognitive functions that average people pass them by; or are social skills and practicality a type of intelligence all their own?
The Lockout King I learned the difference between traditional and practical intelligence early on. Even though I was top of my class in high school, I always did the stupidest things! For starters, I locked my keys in my car about twice a week. My mom was so trained to bail me out of that mess that she kept a spare set of keys on her.
I guess I was too smart for primitive systems. Master of Common Sense Deryck, my best friend since I was 5, has always been the master of common sense one of my great deficiencies.

There is plenty of literature geared to that. I would love to tell you what it feels like to be a year-old who is often overlooked for leadership positions because of my youthful behavioral aura. I attribute this aura directly to having ADHD. I was always pawned off as the token eccentric in their repertoire of friends. At the time, I thought nothing of it. But at 41, it is frustrating to have co-workers 20 years my junior sometimes too and managerial people in my life clearly continue to talk to me like this.
It seems my professional capabilities and accomplishments are constantly being overshadowed by my lively persona. ADHD, in many I feel, nurtures a youthful zest for life. Many of us seem suspended in a hyper-youthful state and our curiosity and charismatic approach to living is often misread as arrested development. For many, like myself, the two are distinctly different. But, unfortunately, navigating the fourth decade of my life, I feel the unconscious stigma of ADHD affect me. It seems to be directly impacting my quest to seek more challenging positions and leadership roles in various organizations.
